The project involved upgrade works to the milk intake building at the Listowel plant.  The milk intake building is located in an extremely busy and live area within the plant incorporating numerous processes including access to large boiler rooms, mechanical workshops, production plant and adjacent laboratories. The milk intake is an extremely busy operation with all factory traffic moving through the building.   Griffin Brothers implemented an extensive traffic management plan to allow movement of all factory traffic.   The scope of works included; removal of 1,750 m2 of asbestos roof, demolition of all existing loading lanes, placement of new polypropylene drainage, construction of new off-loading lanes, new roof structure, clean down and painting of existing steel structure.

The works were sited on the main pier of Dingle harbour. The project consisted of internal demolition/alteration and refurbishment works with the full replacement of existing roof finishes which included structural alterations and remedial works to the existing roof.

The site works included the relocation of the main E.S.B substation for Dingle harbour, construction of a …..pump station and placement of 450 m of foul line along the pier edge.

 

The works were situated at the end of the pier on Dingle Harbour with limited access to three sides of the site due to its close proximity to the water.  As Dingle harbour is an extremely busy fishing port a comprehensive traffic management plan was implemented and maintained to allow movement of port traffic.  This involved detailed segregation and effective communication.

Astellas Irelands plant manufactures a range of treatments which is supplied globally from Killorglin, Co. Kerry.   Griffin Brothers were contracted to complete the total refurbishment and extension of the plants 500 m2 existing canteen.

 

Griffin Brothers formulated a 5 stage plan and presented to the client, which enabled Astellas to maintain a live and working canteen throughout the project serving up to 400 staff members a day.

The project encompassed substantial construction work to the existing canteen and the construction of a new 300 m2 aesthetically pleasing extension with kingspan architectural cladding with light provided by way of large structural glazed units.  Griffin Brothers maintained a safe and controlled site with minimal environmental disturbance to the building users during each of the separate phases and entirety of the project.

The development consisted of a new warehouse facility, new office areas, cleanroom production, garbing area rooms, plant rooms, QC area that ties into the existing live plant.

 

The project contained substantial external works which included over 12,000m2 of new car parking and continuation of existing roads network and associated site works. All works maintained a safe and controlled site as the works took place within a fully operational drug product manufacturing plant.

Construction works involved delivery of a new cleanroom suite and associated services and utilities. Production equipment was installed as part of the construction works as this equipment requires integration into the cleanroom elements and hook-up to utility and electrical systems.

Griffin Brothers acted as P.S.C.S and maintained a safe and controlled site with minimal environmental disturbance as the works took place within a fully operational drug product manufacturing plant. Griffin Brothers at all times isolated construction areas from production areas while fume, noise, vibration and dust generation were controlled maintaining all critical live services, utilities and plant. Griffin brothers integrated co-ordination, installed all plant equipment and all specialist services. The project involved a high level of co-ordination and planning.

This project involved the construction works for the largest ever combined shot blast machine to Liebherr Container Cranes in Killarney.

 

The new equipment has been designed as a combined pass-through monorail shot blast machine, its 36m long 8m wide and tall and split in two along axis of transport.  The new shot blast machine has revolutionized Liebherr’s operations in Killarney.  The construction works involved working in a live sandblasting hall and adjacent to the main plant hall.

 

The scope of works included; 2,000m2 breaking up of existing floor, underpinning of main hall, 80 tonne gantry crane columns to a depth of 3m in a high water table, 2,800m3 of blast pit excavation.  Construction of fully waterproofed R.C. sand blast pit, 280m of crane rails installed through blast pit and external yards to very high tolerances.

 

This project was very complex and completed on time and on budget.

• All existing services including high voltage electricity fibre optic data, gas mains and high pressure steam lines were rerouted.

• Installation of odex piles

• Stainless steel and polypropylene drainage

• Extensive use of fire rated structural steel

• R.C structure to a level of 10m

• R.C deck floors at a level of 4.5m

• Plant access platforms / Stainless steel stairs

As there was no permanent floor at level 24m while installation of evaporators a design and accreditation of scaffold had to be implemented to accommodate works to the entire building.  This work was undertaken in a live environment with continued operation of the factory

The Liebherr Factory in Killarney produces ship to share container cranes on a site area of 190,000m2.  The project involved upgrade works to hall 2 in which the 17,000m2 manufacturing hall remained live at all times with the factory production continuing during the construction phase.

 

The main work encompassed the following:

 

• Demolition of internal offices and welfare facilities

• Create 3 new (72m2 x3#) load bearing structural opes to façade including structural steel removal and installation

• Temporary weathering of hall 2 during works to ensure no interference with production

• 5,000m3 bulk excavation

• 3,500m2 new concrete yard slab

• Storm & foul drainage and attenuation tanks

 

A comprehensive traffic management plan was formulated and implemented to allow movement of arctic trucks and large crane components on new routes.  These involved detailed segregation and effective communication.

The factory manufactured high specification synthetic thread for use in fashion and sports industries.  It is a 37,500m2 factory on a 27 hectare site.

 

The scope of works involved were internally within the factory to create 560m of 1.2mx1.4m on average of reinforced concrete air flow duct and service chambers through the floors of the existing factory.

 

The works consisted of large amounts of saw cutting and excavation.  Griffin Brothers implemented a comprehensive managing system to control dust, noise and fumes when carrying out the works.

 

The logistics of access through the factory for removal of excavations and importation of concrete were executed by implementing a comprehensive traffic management plan and discussed regularly with the client.
